If you are looking for apartments/houses on booking.com just remember booking.com and the like don't verify listings either so you still need to check that short term rentals are allowed in the area and that the property exists and is a legit holiday let. So at that point there's no harm having a look at what's on airbnb in that area and filter it to superhosts and then make the final decision. If a superhost cancels on you they lose their superhost status so if rentals are allowed in the area and the superhost has good reviews it's as safe as holiday lets on booking.com.
You can always double check here when you have your itinerary and have specific areas in mind you'd like to find a holiday let in. Sometimes in California holiday lets are far more expensive than a hotel room or even 2 rooms and then in other areas like Palm Springs a massive house with a pool is cheaper than a hotel. |

Hi again lots of good advice. Like anywhere you book check up on the ratings and as others say use super hosts. We have used Airbnb in San Fran x 2, Monterey X 2 or should I say Pacific grove 10 mins walk to cannary row, Santa Barbara , Lake Tahoe, and Las Vegas . All of these where very good.

We are hopefully going in August and have booked 4 Airbnb's for this trip. I selected entire place and have found some real quirky places that we are looking forward to staying in on our journey around Cali, some are cheaper than hotels and we will have a whole rental to ourselves.

Hi, I’ve used Airbnb a few times now but was very careful with my research. I looked at the places I liked and also found them on other sites or direct listings from the owner. These also came with other and more reviews which kind of helped the validity in my mind. One place we stayed at was also listed on Homeaway and a different US site too, but I booked with Airbnb as the fees were lower! Good luck in finding somewhere in whichever avenue you decide to take.

Excited about Disney
|
We used Airbnb twice in California, once for a few nights in Anaheim and again for a couple of nights in Santa Monica. We also rented one for 7 nights in Reykjavik a couple of years ago. Never had a problem but I always book properties with at least 100+ positive reviews and stay clear of those with none
