We went in August 2016 and 2018, it tends to be a bit quieter towards the end of the month, the northern states go back the same time English schools do (start of September)but the local schools go back around the 2nd week in August. Don't forget they have labour day on the 1st Monday in September too, we've always noticed it to be busier then. Whilst it does quieten down a little, I wouldn't say it's quiet... just a few less hundred people to contend with!

Quietens down in the third week, the fourth week is one of the quietest of the year

We have been many times in Aug and would say huge drop in crowd levels 3rd and 4th week if you can roll over into beginning of Sept it's even better.

We went 14 - 24 August 2016 (as I was a teacher at the time) and the crowds were not too bad. Higher than our April/May 2018 trip but not by miles.
