I click on “New Posts”. I have to go into User CP.

Nothing has changed there. If you have read the thread and replied on it then it isn't "New" to you until someone replies again on it.

But now I realise that has not been the case until today. I am sure I have always seen a “tick” against a post I have just replied to.

You probably had selected Cookie based mark as read in usercp. That would behave like you describe.

Cookie based 'Mark As Read' has been removed in the latest version of the software. The DIBB was upgraded last month.

From the makers of the forum software...

It has no relevance on the modern web where people use multiple devices. It causes people to think the feature is broken because when they view the site on a second device, the threads they read earlier on the first device are now unread again.

Now, once a thread is read, it is read, regardless of device.
