Which route? San Francisco to Monterey

Hi, seeing as though we can't do Hwy 1 between Monterey and our hotel in Pismo Beach, just wondered if anyone has done the stretch between SF and Monterey? Looking at the map it takes in Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. Is it worth it or. should we do the 101 to get more time in Monterey as we are only there 1 night?

We went to santa cruz good to see the sea lions under the pier .stopped at rockaway bay for our 1st look at the ocean .

Santa Cruz has a nice boardwalk and funfair and a nice walk along the long pier. I've passed through but never stopped at half moon bay except for Gas.
