Cheap supermarket shop
Anyone used Aldi in Florida that can give any feedback?
Are the supermarkets away from the immediate area cheaper? Not going to travel far just for a supermarket but if we happen to be passing on the way to somewhere else or one is close to somewhere interesting to visit we might give them a go. Last year we found them all to be relatively expensive as we were looking for fresh rather than processed food. Of course, a few reeses peanut cups, cocoa covered almonds, pretzels etc. made it in the trolley too! |

I think the prices in Winn Dixie are better than Publix if it helps.

Will follow this too. Last year went in to Publix, walked around and came out again, couldn't believe the prices and we had exchanged at $1.50 ! This year I was also hoping to shop at Aldi so I would also be interested to know what it is like. Always shop at Aldi here.

Love Aldi for fresh food. We are spoilt where we live that we have access to such a range of supermarkets. Within a 15 minute drive we have about Aldi, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Booths. Aldi is the number one for our normal fresh food shop.
Booths for those not in the area is like Waitrose but with a focus on local food - their craft beer selection is pretty impressive too. We brought some ham for a quick, cheap sandwich for lunch in Publix one day last year. $7 for about 5 slices! Bonkers. |

I agree food is expensive - I havent checked but bet prices are cheaper out of tourist areas.
We tend to do a big shop at Costco when we arrive (if you are a uk member the membership card works in US too), then top up in Walmart or Publix. I like the Publix deli area but there are cheaper places to buy the basics.

We used the Aldi on the 192 opposite Medieval Times, prices were good but choice was basic no where near as good as the Aldi at home. It was more like when Aldi first started out here many years ago. I wouldn't go out of your way to find an Aldi but as you say if you are passing. There are still reasonable prices in Walmart and even Publix if you shop the offers and aren't set on a particular brand. For example Walmart (we used Cagans crossing) usually has a $1 loaf of bread on offer each day it varies day to day and can be a French stick or a Cuban loaf etc. Also, don't forget the dollar stores most sell basic food items fresh and tinned. We also take food with us that we know is expensive over there tea bags, baked beans etc.

We used Aldi a couple of times during our month long stay in January (the one on Hwy 27). Okay it was a bit further drive than normal as we have a Publix only a couple of minutes drive away but certainly felt it was worth it. We had noticed on our last few trips how food prices were rising and made a conscious decision to cut costs. We did our initial big shop in Aldi for all the basics plus bits and pieces and it came to $80 whereas in Publix we are usually about $130. They obviously don't have the same selection but for milk, eggs, cheese, cold meat, salad stuff, chips etc, why pay more. Just remember you need a quarter for your shopping trolley!

For regular visitors it's worth keeping an eye out on Groupon for special offers for Sams club or BJs membership. Buy in bulk for essentials (some of the food ain't bad either) and top up wherever suits as the weeks go on.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm sure we will use Publix too but it is good to have an option for the essentials. Whereabouts on US27 is the Aldi? We will be near Berry TC.
