Highway 1 - Closed for weeks!
I have just had to replan my trip up the SR-1 to montery and San Franciso as it is now closed in several places, one of which includes a fallen bridge (Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge) which is beyond repair so this will take months to re build.
There are approx 450 people isolated (as there is a massive mud slide on another part of the road (nearer montery) Some details are here: thebigsurblog/ and on Facebook facebook/search/top/?q=Gerry%20Malais So the entire SR1 is off (its ok from Montery to San Francisco) Hope the folks are all well as they have had to have all their supplies air lifted to them!

How awful for the people who are isolated. Let's hope they get what they need. We are doing the PCH in August. Please can you advise if there is somewhere you can get updates or a good website to keep abreast of the situation or indeed a good alternative route.

We are going in May and were planning on driving all the way up the coast from Santa Monica to San Francisco stopping in Santa Barbara, Cambria, Monterrey and ending in San Francisco.
Could anyone advise what our options are if the road is still impassable in May and other places to stop Thanks |

If the bridge is still out then you wont be able to travel from santa monica to montery on the SR1 . you will have to take the i5 to montery

Big Sur is notorious for bits of it falling into the sea. A few years back we had driven Los Angeles to San Francisco. Only two weeks later a section near Big Sur had disappeared to the ocean below. They fixed that in about four months. There will be detour signs which will take you inland which means you may miss some scenery and your journey may be slightly longer.

Indeed! however the only detour today is go back the way you came ! there is no alternative except the i5 I cant find any route that takes you on the SR1, going from LA.

Thanks everyone.
Am I right in thinking that we will still be able to get from Santa Barbara to Cambria to stay overnight and visit Hearst Castle, but that we will then have to go from Cambria to Paso Robles and take the 101 to Monterey? |
