San Diego without a car

We are looking to visit San Diego in October but won't have a car. We are looking to visit Seaworld, San Diego Zoo etc but will use Uber/taxi's for transportation to these. Can anyone recommend a hotel or area to stay that would be in nice walking distance to restaurants etc. I have looked at lots of hotels along the beach (Blue Sea Hotel, Tower23, Pacific Terrace but now have seen the La Jola village area which looks beautiful. Could anyone possible steer me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

We stayed in La Jolla - not easy without car I would say. Without a car I would recommend The Gas Lamp Quarter - right in the centre and loads within walking distance, and plentiful choice of hotels.

Easy access to Trolley which takes you to almost all the main tourist areas - and as you say Uber/Taxi too.

La Jolla was lovely, we stayed in the Hyatt - but even from there down to the Village/Beach was not walkable. Trolley system also does not run as far as La Jolla. There were some nice places though down by the front too.

The area with the most restaurants within walking distance from the hotels is the Gaslamp Quarter downtown. It is more expensive to stay downtown, but it really is the most convenient area with loads of places you can walk to. My picks for hotels in the Gaslamp Quarter would be the Marriott Marquis, the Manchester Grand Hyatt, the Omni, Hilton Gaslamp Quarter and the Marriott Gaslamp Quarter.

La Jolla is a beautiful town and one of my favorite areas of San Diego. It is also expensive to stay there but so worth it if you have the budget. I would suggest looking for hotels near the village, which is what the locals call the downtown area. There will be more restaurants and cafes within walking distances there. Some hotels near the village would be the La Valencia, the Pantai (which is more of a boutique style hotel), the Inn by the Sea and the La Jolla Cove Suites.

Another part of San Diego that has a few restaurants you could walk to would be in the Liberty Station community in Point Loma. There is a Marriott Courtyard Liberty Station hotel and a Homewood Suites right next door to it. You can walk a few blocks from those hotels to a few nice restaurants in Liberty Station- it's a lovely little community with some parks. There is also the Liberty Public Market that is an indoor hall with quite a few different food vendor stalls. Liberty Station is right near the airport though, so during the day you see and hear the airplanes taking off overhead, but they stop takeoffs overnight.

Unfortunately, there aren't many other similar areas to stay in San Diego that have a lot of hotels and restaurants within walking distance. There's always one or two restaurants about, but the largest numbers near the hotels will be those downtown in the Gaslamp Quarter. San Diego is a very car-oriented city and most people do get about that way.

Thank you so much both of you. I still love the look of La Jolla but have also just seen the Marriot Marquis and it looks perfect for us. Decisions!

I've stayed at the Marriott Marquis a few times and really loved it there. They have a really lovely pool area and it was great to be able to walk from the hotel right into Seaport Village, which is next door. There is a Cheesecake Factory restaurant behind Seaport Village which is always nice.

We have stayed at the Hilton Bayfront and Hilton Gaslamp. The Marriott marquis is a lovely hotel.

The Gaslamp district is a great location without a car
