Disney are getting increasingly greedy and double charging in terms of after hours events. I hate to say but it’s becoming too expensive for me in terms of my sense of getting scammed. I am clearly a minority though as people will pay for these things.

Just checked my spreadsheet for August 2015 opening times for the last two weeks in August and every night MK was open until either 11pm or midnight. I remember being shocked when they released the hours for 2016 because the latest MK was open until was 10pm but sometimes it was only open until 9pm and on one night it closed at 7pm for MNSSHP.
For the same 2 weeks in August this year MK closes at 9pm every night apart from 4 nights when it closes at 10pm but it also closes at 6pm on 4 nights because of MNSSHP dates have been brought forward. I think it is very cheeky and really annoying that for the last 2 weeks in August there are only 3 occasions across all 4 parks when they are open past 10pm (all EMH and only available to onsite guests) and only 10 occasions across all 4 parks when they are only past 9pm! I feel a strongly worded email to Disney needs to be sent! |

Further proof that the Disney business model is shifting away from the happy repeat guest (who knows how to maximize value and navigate cost savings) to the first time visitor (not having any idea how to optimize plans and certainly wouldn't notice an erosion in service levels with no direct knowledge for how things used to be).
Most DIBBers are repeat visitors and have been going to Disney many times over a long stretch of time. Hindsight makes these types of reductions in operating hours more noticeable and painful. New guests wouldn't have the same context and certainly would not notice that what used to be offered under normal no-extra-Disney-surcharge EMHs is now a hard ticket extra fee. The early hours are now Early Morning Magic, the late hours are now Disney After Dark. The best spots to watch the fireworks are cordoned off for dessert parties. Next up will be tiered access to FastPasses depending on which level hotel you stay. Paid additional FastPasses (or premium access to FastPass Maxx options like Disneyland already has) can't be too far off. It isn't one thing in particular...but the 'death by a thousand cuts' approach by WDW that has turned my family off. Someday (maybe) I'll return once Star Wars calms down in a decade. For now, the thought of pricing a WDW package and comparing to the same vacation even a year or two ago...and then thinking about how much less I would actually be getting for more money is enough to keep me away. |

Strongly worked email now sent. I've pointed out that MK, Epcot and DHS are open for 56 more hours in 2015 then they are scheduled to be in 2019 and even when you take into account AK and the fact that that park now opens later than it did in 2015 the hours are still down by 13 for 2019 hours.I've also pointed out that during the same period ticket prices have increased by 25%...

We are going in July for the first time since 2013. I honestly don't think I will ever go back. Not just because things are getting more expensive and you get less but also due to ages of our family.
I know this won't bother Disney as I'm sure for every guest that says "never again" 2 will go for a first time. I may go to DLP when Disney have finished refurbing it.

According to the DIBB's historical park hours page, back in August 2007 MK opened until 9pm or 10pm (or sometimes 7pm), EP opened until 9pm, HS opened until 9pm or 10pm, and AK opened until 6pm or 7pm. It's similar for other years around then.
In August 2019, MK will open until 9pm (or sometimes 6pm), EP will open until 9pm, HS will open until 9pm, and AK will open until 8:30pm or 9pm. That assumes Disney doesn't change the opening hours. So, in 12 years, we've lost an hour at MK, maybe an hour at HS, but gained 2 hours at AK per night. Overall, the parks at WDW are open the same amount of hours as they were in 2007.

What about the years inbetween 2007 and 2019? I remember our first visit in 2011 and mk never closed at 9pm.
I’d imagine attendance was much lower in 2007 so maybe not so much need to open late. Edited at 05:55 PM. |
