Alamo or Dollar car rental help

We have always used Alamo car hire in Orlando, checked for our San Francisco to Las Vegas trip & it is working out at over £800 for an intermediate SUV on Alamo Brits! (Have found half that price quotes with DCFCH but they don't have a pick up on Fisherman's Wharf)

Anyway, just discovered there is a Dollar car hire place at our hotel in San Fran (Sheraton at Fishermans Wharf). Is Dollar OK to rent from? If using toll roads are there excessive charges? We have always used Alamo & never had a problem ...

Hi Minniemam.

We hired from Dollar in Orlando in August last year and they were fine. Not a huge selection of cars to choose from but it was easy to get the kind of thing we wanted and pick up/drop off were both fine.

No hard sell on the the sunpass (for the tolls) and they were happy with our 'no extras' approach to hire cars. We did queue for a little while to collect our car but probably no more than 10 minutes.

Good Luck

Get an Uber to the airport and collect from there. Will most likely save you money and you will get a choice You will get what you are given is San Fran itself.

I found the drive out of SFO airport location a breeze whereas driving through SF was a nightmare, harder than LA because the streets are narrower, there’s more pedestrians and other drivers were unaware cars came with indicators. Depends on where you’re off to and how experienced you are with inner city driving of course.

If you do go with Dollar join Dollar Express. It may not make much difference time wise in a smaller location but I have found they don’t upsell/scam loyalty club members. And double check the paperwork and make sure the balance is right before you leave.

Thanks guys, think on this occasion we may have to book with Dollar as the rental company is in our hotel & can drop off at Treasure Island which is a 10 minute walk from our hotel in Las Vegas too. Will join Dollar Express, thanks for the tip.

When we pick up the car we are driving straight to Mariposa, ready for Yosemite ... if we were going to Monterey the airport pick up idea would have been good. Thank You
