We stayed at the Sunroute Plaza in Shinjuku, which is one of the suburbs of the centre. It was reasonably priced if a bit "budget" in appearance, but was clean and safe, so we weren't too worried. Crutially, it was only a couple of minutes' walk away from the train station, where we bought Suica cards - these work like an Oyster card, and are really easy to use. Get advice as to how to buy them from a machine from the travel assistance booth in the station - the machine will show everything in English, though, and is very step by step easy.

From there, we got a train to Harajuku, only 2 stops away, and explored a beautiful public park and garden, with a shrine to Emperor Meiji. It is a really pretty place, and has a small cafe too where lunch is cheap and tasty, plus there are loos.

Once you have finished there, go back out the entrance to the park, over the road in front of you, and there is an amazing long street of tiny, independent shops, all bright colours and kooky stores. There is a shop there called Daiso, which is the equivalent of our £1 stores here, as everything costs 100 yen.

We also did a 2-day trip to Hiroshima from here, on the bullet train, which was absolutely incredible. If you want more details than this, check out my trip report on here - all my reports are in an index on the WDW & Florida Trip reports indexes page - it is entitled The Far East 2016.

Hope this all helps a bit!

We have stayed at the following hotels in Tokyo (excluding the Disney area):

en.parkhoteltokyo

gate-hotel.jp/en/asakusa-kaminarimon/

en.southerntower.co.jp

claska/en/

All were fine but the fourth one is in a more residential area where less English was spoken so I’d be less likely to recommend that in your case.

The others were all close to major metro stations so easy for transport if your parents are comfortable buying travel cards (we had manaca cards) and travelling that way. The second one is right by Senso Ji, one of the major shrines, so may be the best option if they have limited time. You didn’t mention budget so if these aren’t suitable, at least you know the areas they are in are fine!

There’s lots to see in Tokyo - we liked Ueno Park (which is also home to museums), and the Imperial Palace Gardens (where you can see the outside of the palace obviously - I think you can possibly arrange tours but we didn’t).

As well as senso ji we've visited the Tokyo skytree and Tokyo tower (on different trips) to see the skyline; you pay for both of these so the government building someone mentioned earlier is a good free option - we saw the Olympic torch and flags there for Tokyo 2020.

Another important shrine is the Meiji shrine, it has lots of sake barrels as well as huge tori gates on the path to the shrine.

Or Zojoji is a temple near Tokyo tower that we stopped to visit on the way from the station - I think the other two I mentioned are more impressive but this one had interesting Jizo statues.

We spent two nights in a ryokan in Hakone and it is a great place too, but mt Fuji is often not visible due to clouds later in the day. As others say travelling to various places isn’t too bad due to the bullet trains, but I also love exploring Tokyo.

Finally if your parents would like help navigating the city and the sights, I’m sure they could get a guide for a day. On our first trip we had a private guide for a day as part of our package and while we’d have been ok alone, she was great.
