At the moment yes, BUT it is supposed to change how you do it some time this year.. reportedly they are going to add a flight connection area for domestic arrivals so you don't need get on a bus or exit into the main departure area and go back through main security

I would say you should be fine
Ive dont the GLA-LGW-MCO before (not with a child though!) and it's fine. Coming back is worse than going because of the times etc. You just want to be home in bed but you gotta wait in London for another flight to GLA aha. But other than that its all good!

Plenty of time It doesn't take long it's just a faff! My kids are well travelled now so can sort themselves out at security but when they were toddlers it was an extra stress we definitely didn't need!
And yes, that wait on the way home is loooooong

We've done this before and it was absolutely fine. Just took our time and had something to eat at Gatwick before picking up a hire car and driving over to LHR.
If the flights were the right price I'd do it again too!

On the way home on this route do you need to collect luggage in LGW or is it checked through?

It’s checked through to your final destination. Just double check with agent at MCO but they do that automatically anyway
