I watched this as well and I think it’s too easy to judge. It was rural Idaho in the 1970s. My best friend is from rural Indiana but came to the UK when she was 10. Her dad was the youngest in a family of 12 children which his mum had between the ages of 14 (when she married) and 40. When my friend went back to visit her family in the 80s she was shocked that women weren’t allowed to drive, work outside the home or dance at the social unless asked by a man. My point is that it’s hard for us to comprehend the naive and insular lifestyle people led in these rural areas. I’m not condoning any of their behaviour but I do think it’s worth considering the way they lived their lives and how vulnerable they were to his manipulation.

I can’t believe a family would actually go through with something like this even if it was the 70s.

I think the fact he was ‘censured’ by the Mormon church for another abuse of a child tells a story. Why the heck wasn’t the police called - he should have done a 10 year stretch at that point.

Am watching now. Finding it weird how when they speak about him they all smile so much! The Father crying over what he did in the car when he should be feeling worse about letting a peodophile have his daughter! Its just madness.

This was horrifying. I cannot comprehend how utterly gullible the parents were. That mother grinning away when she spoke about him made me feel sick. All of the adults involved in this, including his brother, are despicable.
