If outbound you wont you have your luggage? Plus by the. Time you get to the city it will be 9pm but your body will think it's 2am.
If on return it might be worth checking what the maximum luggage hold time the airport does. If on way back perhaps get an earlier MCO to NYC flight that day so you can have just a couple of hours or maybe a day or two. You will have cases. Personally we got ba package flights London to Ny, hotel in NY, indirect back from MCO for less than a return direct flight to M C O. Just bought a JetBlue flight separately for the internal flight. Well under 100. If you do opt to do it the way you propose, I suspect it is possible but exhausting. And the travel back to the airport at rushour is likely to be time consuming. So not a no totally, I just think I would do it differently. Edited at 10:10 AM. |

I would definitely do it. The air train is easy and you could have a lovely morning in NYC.
We did similiar but had 2 nights in NYC and an earlier flight into JFK arriving about lunchtime. Edited at 10:08 AM. |

I’ve been to NYC 7 times now so have explored Queens and Brooklyn too. The area around JFK is dodgy. You’d need to get a hotel somewhere like Long Island City which is closer to Manhattan than the airport anyway. Hotel prices in NYC can be very high and LIC is a good alternative in general. I say in for a pound... might as well enjoy Manhattan but if the costs are too much to justify for the night, LIC is a good alternative and easy to get to on the subway from the airport and one stop from Manhattan. The JFK airport hotels are not in an area you want to walk about in. It was the only place in NYC i felt uneasy. We braved it to get some food at McD’s and a cop told us to go back to the hotel and use Uber if we wanted to go anywhere again.

Whether bags were checked through or not, I would do this in a heartbeat, I’ve done it on much shorter layovers.
Book a hotel either near Penn Station or near an E train subway station, and use LIRR or Subway to get back to JFK the next day. Generally more reliable than a car journey for timing. |

A work colleague of mine faced this question, changed it to a 47 hour layover and never looked back. He now plans stopovers and visits to other cities as part of his travel plans. He's also done Reykjavik when he went with Iceland air.

We are doing this next month on the way home. We get to JFK at 11 from Miami. We will get the LIRR to our hotel in Manhattan get a few hours sleep then head out early in the morning for a day in NYC. Our bags will be checked right through so just hand luggage with us. Then head back to JFK about 4. It’s our 3rd time visiting so not planning too much in just a mooch and some delicious NYC pizza!

Why crazy ?
However your bags will NOT be held overnight at JFK same day yes, overnight no. That's my personal experience of AA layovers in NYC. So I'd suggest you book an airport hotel so next morning you can check out, leave your bags in storage there, spend the day in Manhattan and collect them late afternoon for check in. Still leaves you plenty of time. Technically AA will tell you that you can't check your bags in ,in the morning for an evening flight , but I have done it without issue but the risk is if they do stick to the rules you'd have toeither drag the luggage back to the hotel or find left luggage facilities before jumping on the train. A bit of a risk if you get a jobsworth at check in. There are left luggage facilities at Penn station too as far as I remember if you really want to stay in Manhattan and not drag your luggage back and forth quite so much . Edited at 03:43 AM. |

As well as 23 hour layovers we've also nipped into Manhattan for just lunch and a wander.
I've done it in Chicago too as well as Dublin and Gothenburg, it's a brilliantly cheap way if you aren't utterly focused on just Orlando to add to your holiday (I do understand for some it wouldn't appeal as it's all about getting there and maximising time at the final destination but for me it's a bonus ) |
