I always take my spare car key on holiday... anyone else ?

Am i the only one who takes my spare car key on holiday ?

If i ever use a meet and greet service at the airport or even a take your keys car park, i always take my spare key too... one stays in my bag, the other in the wifes..

The advantage of this is for 2 reasons, first one is when we arrive back, the mrs and kids can go direct to the car, load luggage, start engine if its cold and wait "relaxing" rather than all of us queuing up for the keys...

The second reason is in the event the primary key was lost on holiday or the meet and greet service lost the key... that way we can get home and sort it in due course...

Anyone else do this ? if not, i suggest it

I do. Never trust the meet & greet people to be as careful as I am. Easy for them to get keys mixed up when you think how many they deal with.

Many years ago, my sister arrived back from a Florida trip. They had parked at an airport hotel that included parking. When they arrived to pick up the car, they (my sister and her husband) couldn’t find their car key. There was the expected “You had it”, “No, YOU had it”. Cue my brother in law driving 1.5 hours to the hotel to break in to their car. The key never turned up. So, yes, take a spare key!

Once we were just standing to get off the plane after the flight home and my husband looked at me and said that he'd just realized he had left the car key on the hire car key fob... luckily I had my keys on me. To say it was a bit tense on that drive home is putting it mildly! What ever possessed him to put our car key on the ring with the hire car in the first place I'll never know, but the fretting from him that someone had his precious cars key now and could get into it... words failed me... looking back now I am charitable and blame the over night lack of sleep flight and the mood at coming home after Florida for his utterly ridiculous panic... but at the time I did get a bit angry at him and pointed out that even if they wanted to steal the car, not only would it involve an expensive flight to England, but they would then have to ship it back, unless they were just coming to steal the radio. Or of course there was the possibility that whoever noticed (if they even did) the extra key, would be able to pin it down to our hire when they are constantly turned around, get in touch with fellow members of thier international car thief gang and come to our house to steal it was fairly remote too... I would like to point out at this stage his car is not an Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce etc... its a vw polo... and shockingly still in our possession after this incident five years ago, so they haven't come over yet for it!

Yep me too, we stay and park at hotels, and once again i worry they deal with so many keys, it only takes one person in a chain to misslay then that i dont need the worry after a 8hr flight plus customs plus baggage reclaim.
One less thing to concern me.

I don't. I am not a 'what if' type of person.

If they lose it then they can sort it. I will be in a hire car and gone, they can get my car to me at their expense.

Plus this car I have just bought has a key the size of an iPhone so it's locked in my safe. I use the normal size key. No way am I carrying a £500 key around as a spare!

However we must all do what we think is right for us.

DH always does, it ends up in the bottom of my bag as he’s chucked it in there, along with his glasses, phone, earphones, wallet, sunglasses, passport, house keys and the obligatory packet of Starburst... then strides around the airport carrying nothing. I am the donkey apparently. Sorry that turned into a bit of a rant!

I don’t normally but with the rise of housebreakings for car theft being on the extreme rise I’m seriously considering it for that reason
