Thanks for your good wishes JudeB. He seems fine as he came out of hospital yesterday and will depend on how it has healed and whether further surgery needed. Fingers crossed.

DS fractured his Humerus when he was 10. They couldn’t use a cast for that area. He wasn’t in huge amounts of pain from the outset but within 2 weeks he was able to swim and do exercises without pain. Children certainly do seem to heal quickly. Keeping everything crossed for you xx

There are options.
Whilst the insurance would pay out for him and a parent. Not sure it d pay out for everyone and deff not 2nd families insurance (i collapsed and had to miss a family holiday insurance refused to pay out for whole family as thry didnt need to miss their holiday just cos i couldnt fly... hth
Thanks scojos. The whole party is booked together for flights, accommodation etc. Obviously need to to speak to our separate insurers but if DD's family can't go I am wondering if we will be left to cover the whole cost of the villas etc.

I broke my upper arm in 2016. It was put in back slab (two big pieces of cast material with bandages around it) for the first 2 days as it was too swollen to do anything else with, plus a sling. After that it was xrayed again, was a clean break so I fortunately escaped having it pinned or plated, and I had a custom made cast and brace made. The cast had to be adjusted twice a week for the first 3 weeks, then once a week for the next two. This was purely because of the amount of swelling. I wouldn't have been able to go overseas in that time.

Travelling in the car was painful for a while, I had to have a cushion under the arm. I think flying would be easier but the thought of having people close around and jostling would have bothered me. I had to go on the tube about 5 weeks in and that was pretty horrible.

I wouldn't 100% rule it out just yet, but at the same time I wouldn't get my hopes up either.
Thanks BebeYorkshire. That break sounds awful. At the moment its hope for the best and plan for the worst. We can always plan for another time.

Thanks bighal. I think it will depend on whether he needs another op to pin it which we will find out next week as he'll have another xray to check how it has healed. I am assuming they will need a fit to fly as well. fingers crossed!

I am sorry to hear what has happened to your Grandson and hope this heals well without the need of surgery later on.

She was devastated when she thought it meant no swimming. If your DGS can fly and you need a waterproof cover, I can highly recommend DryPro. They are more expensive than other options but a million times better. DD swam and played in the pool every day. We followed the instructions and time limits and her cast was bone dry when it came off.

Fingers crossed for you all 😄
Thanks Animagus for your good wishes and the recommendation for the cover. I had assumed that if he can fly that he wouldn't be able to swim or get wet. Will definitely get one of these if he can go so he doesn't feel he is missing out too much and we have Discovery cove booked.

Thanks Aliloo. Will definitely order a larger waterproof cover.Sorry to hear your son is still un comfortable after 2 weeks. Broken elbows can be difficult another DGS broke this when he was 6 and was tricky. Hope he's out of pain and healed soon.

Certainly a dry arm cover will help if he does go.

My son broke both arm bones 4 weeks before. He had an OP to pull it straight. He was out of cast in 3!
Thanks caj. Gosh, both arm bones and out of cast in 3 weeks! As you say it depends on the break. They have manipulated it into position under anaesthetic without pins and will see how it looks next week. Not sure if they will do a split cast but will put a lighter, coloured one if it doesn't need another op. Fingers crossed.
