Help for a teen going on a trip of a lifetime

Hi all,

My DS is going to China on a world challenge trip. He's going for a month. He will be in both cities and in the middle of nowhere, inlcuding staying in a Buddhist monastery. No phones to be taken. Electricity is not guaranteed at each place.

Clearly he needs to record the trip in photo form. But with carrying his rucksack for the month, camera needs to be light. Lack of electricity means good battery life.

What would you suggest?

Thank you

My canon G7X II is a great little camera, spare batteries would be ideal and charging blocks for when he has access to electricity.

Why can’t he take his phone?
I would be concerned about that.

Its part of the rules of the trip. Each group has two leaders and is issued with basic phone with Chinese SIM in it. So they can access help. Part of the challenge is to be 'off grid'.

Interesting.
It’s says mobiles are strongly discouraged, I think I would be sending a very basic mobile (no internet) so he could keep in touch with us.

Apologies for the side track! Hope you get a camera that you need I am sure the dibbers will help out.

Getting theough from China would be a challenge anyway. School have said no. Atm I'm cool with that. Closer I will wobble for sure and will need reminding that I went twice on similar trips. One I got dengue fever and came back 2 stone lighter and barely able to carry my rucksack !

I chaperone school trips and we don’t allow phones. It just causes problems. If the child needs to contact home then we let them but we don’t want a homesick child texting mum in the middle of the night. Much better that we know there is an issue. Can reassure them and if appropriate we’ll phone home with them. Plus there’s the issue of call / data costs. Wifi access in China is poor and limited.

I’d suggest an inexpensive digital camera.
