At one time I’d of agreed. With digital cameras I’d download my pictures to portable hard drives pens etc. Once mobile phones started improving the camera went and most of my pictures are taken on a phone. In the last 10 years iv had at least 7 or 8 phones. Some pictures are backed up on iCloud some on google pictures some on amazon pictures. Many more are stored in the old phones which won’t charge anymore or been damaged or lost. Those memories are gone. I’m also getting older and technology is tiring me. With the usb drive I have a solid materialistic object I can save place on a shelf dated and can easily access it. To me it’s a step back to the future. Well done Disney expensive but great for someone getting lost in technology

USBs (and portable hard drives) can/do also fail.
Just shows to have multiple back-ups of everything and consider in different locations. In addition to the usual phones/tablets, I have mine across a variety of hard drives (1 kept away from home), and different cloud options. All sync-up and back themselves up automatically (with the exception of off-site copy) |

I suspect it'll take longer for Disney to post the USB stick to you than it takes to download the files.
But, yes, some people won't want to spend the time downloading all the photos to their device. And this option allows them to skip that 'hassle' and pay Disney to do it for them. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, BTW.

Because many people still save things on USB sticks? Lots of USB sticks are still sold every year. They are very handy for transferring things between PCs and laptops.
Because some people would prefer it if Disney downloaded and transferred their photos onto a USB stick and sent that to them rather than downloading the photos themselves? The Disney Photopass site still has the option to have your photos printed onto a mouse mat. Who wants or needs a mouse mat in 2019? (Erm, me!)
