I think theres a few factors here. FOP is the most popular FP+ at the moment, so everyone is booking it up regardless of if theyre definitely going to use it. I think alot of FP's for this ride are being wasted by people ending up not going etc. People are booking them for days theyre going to Water parks or shopping etc and are reluctant to cancel them as theyre so hard to get and just on the slight off chance their plans change and they can use them. As a result the standby queue is shorter as they can let more through. However, the standby queue is always factored in to assume all FP users show up, which obviously isnt happening.

Disney releasing FP's on the day makes sense, theyre obviously holding some back to guarantee they go to people actually going to the park as you wouldnt book a fastpass in the morning unless that was definitely your destination.
