Jean and Barbara do Amsterdam day two - canals and red light
Day two
Good nights sleep and down for another good breakfast then we walked towards the station as we were doing a canal cruise today. As we walked it started raining and of course we were the only two without a coat or umbrella. We got to the boat and they let us get on and we thought we would have had loads of space when a massive party of Japanese boarded and suddenly it was jam packed. Anyway we went round the canals for an hour and the rain kept coming but it was lovely to sit down and see Amsterdam, well worth doing the trip. We got off and sat at one of the pavement cafes for a bit then walked down towards the floating Flower Market. The sun had come out and it was a lovely walk, even though we went the long way round as I got a bit lost. It was great to just stroll alongside the canals, but my sense of direction went totally haywire and we had to keep asking for directions. When we found the Market we had a great banana pancake. It was really filling. We wandered along all the stalls on the market. The stalls are actually on the canal and it is called a floating market. We decided to take home some tulip bulbs but it was so hard trying to decide which colours to pick, they were all beautiful. these were what I bought the colours again were fab and we went for a lovely mixture, then we walked backup to Dam square and just sat and people watched. There were several street entertainers which we loved watching. Such a relaxing time. Then we bought some souvenirs (Slippers) and took them back to the hotel and out again for a walk round, I felt my big blister on my toe growing. We had at first thought of going to see the famous red light district tomorrow night after a coach trip we had booked but we thought we might be too tired so we went off for a walk to see if we could find it and we did! It was quite funny really as it was middle of the afternoon and there were all these ladies in the glass doors shaking around to attract the men. There were a lot of shops there too selling things that I had never seen before in my life! We were going to go to an Argentinian steakhouse tonight as there are several in Amsterdam, but when we looked at the menu it didn't really appeal and also it was quite expensive so we went back to the place we were at on our first night and had chicken and chips which was great, then back to the hotel for a relaxing evening and I managed to watch the first episode of the Apprentice.
