Four Points on a Fat Boy - August 2012 - Day 11
Four Points on a Fat Boy – Wednesday 1st – Saturday 11th August 2012
Cast members: Me – Alanda – riding bikes for nearly 20 years now, but enjoying being pillion on this trip. Current bike is Harley Davidson 883 Sportster. DH – Wiggy – riding bikes since just after he could walk I think - say over 35 years! Current bike Harley Davidson Fat Boy. Day 11. Gretna – Warrington 186 miles We packed the bike, settled up and left Gretna on our last day on the road. We decided to call into Gretna Green and have a look round the Blacksmith shop before we finally left Scotland behind us. After a quick look around the museum and plenty of photos taken we aimed for the A69 via Longtown and Brampton to see Hadrian’s Wall at Birdoswald Fort. It really is an amazing sight. Back on the A69 towards Carlisle and then the A6 through Penrith and Kendal. Having been spoilt with the empty(ish) roads in Scotland it was a shock to find traffic again, and the temptation was just to head for home. After a brief stop at a pub on the A65 we decided to ride while the weather was good, so enjoyed the scenic Yorkshire Dales National Park, then turned towards Warrington at Long Preston, coming back through Nelson, Padiham, Bury and Bolton and eventually Atherton and Leigh to home. Highs and lows of our tour- well, I actually can’t think of many lows - just the unreliable weather that we routinely have to put up with in the UK. Other than that we spent a fantastic 11 days touring our own country, and were surprised by the roads, the countryside and the pleasantness of all the people we met. We indulged ourselves with good accommodation, food and drink, and although it was exhausting (even on the back) we finished each day contented with a real sense of achievement. I would love to visit some places again – Lands End, many, many parts of Scotland, the countryside around Thirsk – and give them more than fleeting attention. After 11 days and 2338 miles, the Fat Boy was in need of a good clean! Next year - Deserts and Parks of the US west
