You are correct - as I left one employer on 18th July and started with the current one on 19th July

In the first month I wonder if both of the employers used the tax code. You can only have a tax allowance with one employer (assuming you are over the taxable limit at both) . Have a look at the payslips in the overlapping month. Do they both show the same tax month period? This could mean a refund was made at one and is now being clawed back.

Hope you let us know !

Spot on!

Hi All,

I phoned them this morning and they were very helpful and I apologised for sounding like a donut as I dont really understand all of this!

As I left my previous employer and started at my new employer in the same month, apparently the tax allowance of 1257L has been applied twice! this means that there has been an underpayment so they need £600 back to clear this and will take a little bit each month until April 2022 to clear.

My question now is... Is it worth me just paying the 600.00 now and then my tax code will go back to 1257L?

Thanks for all the replies on this - it is really something I do not understand!

It’s up to you. I would just see it as an interest free loan. It wasn’t your error. I would even consider telling HMRC it will cause hardship and spread payment over 2 years
