Exactly my approach!

In the past we’ve always added a car for 2 weeks and it’s normally been around the same price as flight only, but because cars are ridiculously expensive at the moment that didn’t work this time, so I thought I’d try adding hotels instead.
This is the way I do it as well - I check return flights to various places (including the likes of boston, new york, washington etc) make a note of the price for each leg so I can see the cheapest flight out and cheapest return, then I use those cheapest routes and go to the Build a Custom Trip and add / remove different hotels / cars etc to get it cheapest.

Like you usually adding a car came in at the same price or sometimes cheaper a bit than flight only but due to the issues this year I decided to try for the hotels... what I didn't realise was the 6 day hotel stay changing the price - I wonder if this is all the time, or due to the "extra sale" on package holidays that BA was running!

We had cancelled our August holiday, deciding with doing work on the house we couldn’t do Florida as well (plus we went at Christmas). We decided we could manage a week away, and were looking at AI in the Canaries. Most prices were coming in around £4K for the 4 of us, so I thought I’d see how much a week in Orlando would be. Ended up booking 7 nights at the Hard Rock, with direct flights from Birmingham (our local airport) and transfers for £4.5k for the 4 of us, going 11 August. The hotel if booking through hotels.com is £3k, which makes flights £1.5k - still got to book Universal tickets, but really excited. We’ve never done a hotel holiday and 1st time with no car! Booked with First Choice, but it’s all through TUI.

We've also been looking and looking at flights until our eyes have gone square 😂
We did have an Airbnb villa booked so we needed flights to align with our villa dates 13th August-1st Sept.
I honestly can't believe how obscene some of the prices are. Newcastle would have been ideal for us but we were keeping our options open and were prepared to go indirect.
Anyway we found a great deal on travel republic staying onsite at Universal's Endless Summer hotel with flights from Heathrow. Indirect to NewYork then onto Orlando mco on 16th August
Coming home indirect flying to Montreal then Heathrow on 3rd Sept.
Got £100 off per room and got a 2 bed suite, so all in all hotel and flights has cost £4178.
Hotel in it's own was £1940 which means flights were £2238 for the 4 of us so £559 each. Still need to book our seats so there will be more to pay but we're so happy with this deal and have cancelled the villa so we're finally all sorted.
The £100 off per room ends today so hope this helps someone out and even not staying onsite the flights are an amazing deal over the 6 weeks 😀
