Do you own thing, tip as you feel and ignore everyone else’s preconception of what is right. 😀 I honestly don’t care if a server expects a tip for below average service. If they ask why no tip, tell them 🤷🏼

Not really!
If my bill had ‘work to car’ and an extra gratuity section at the bottom with recommended 18% on it then that would similar, but the bill is the bill. Same in a restaurant.

Your not getting the fact that it’s the American way that the ‘labour’ part of the bill is the tip and it’s expected that it will be paid along with the food total.

What you’re saying might be true for a small diner or cheap chain, but servers in Disney get a decent wage. As suggested earlier why should someone waiting a table get Disney get double the tip that a server in the likes of Applebee’s does. It’s not like they are doing a different job or working less. Just because I know it’s how the American system works doesn’t mean I agree with it.

Dr JJ ..I totally get that, just don’t care 🤷🏼 What you’re not getting us that some people myself included don’t like being forced to do something which is voluntary. I’ll happily tip over 20% if my food arrives on time, its hot and is what I ordered. You can’t be bothered to get any of those 3 easy things right, no tip.

I do get that servers are low paid, and their wages are made up by tips.
However, wages aren’t that low that the need $30 per table.
If 20% of a $60 bill is ok as a tip then why do they deserve 3x that for a bill of $200 when they aren’t doing anything different? They bring out the same amount of meals to the table, same amount of drinks, same amount of work involved?

Why do people who play for Manchester United deserve to earn 100x those who play for Macclesfield earn?

They dribble, pass and shoot the football the same amount, same amount of tackling, same amount of work involved!

Where have I ever said I believe in tipping for poor or awful service?

It’s just the way it is, no one’s pretending it makes sense but you won't change things by under tipping - the only way is by not going in the restaurant in the first place and making them realise the menu prices are too high.

If you really want to get into tipping, you should head over to Disboards.

The Americans tip for EVERY THING not just at restaurants!
  • Hotel housekeeping - some even print up special envelopes and leave a tip per day
  • The luggage porters at DCL terminals
  • If they get something like a bed or other furniture delivered
  • Tour guides and bus tour divers
  • Food delivery and some even tip when they order online and collect the food
  • Hairdressers, nail techs and other beauty services
