Yes, I agree that it's definitely free compared to paying the rack rate. It's just that there are other times of the year when guests pay less than the rack rate.
The fact is that Disney gets people to pay the inflated rack rate by offering 'free' dining in return. In effect, that 20% to 40% increase in price over the "discounted" rate is what's paying for the "free" dining plan. The increase in price is, however, less than it would cost to buy the dining plan, so if you were planning on staying onsite and getting the dining plan then it definitely makes sense to book when free dining is on. You could think of it this way. For almost 5 months of the year, the rooms are offered at the "normal" rate. For around 6 months of the year, the rooms are offered at a higher rate with dining included in the price to account for the higher rate. And for around 1 month, the rooms are offered at the same higher rate with no additional extras.

Sorry for the slow reply been busy with work!
Its for 2 adults and 2 kids The free dining deal included regular dining plan + upgrade to deluxe. Yes I think you are right is room is 40% more expensive (give or take) if you have no interest in dining plan and you book during this deal. I think the accurate way of stating it is the dining plan is in reality heavily discounted whichever way you look at it. I agree with the idea that you may choose to stay at a more expensive hotel to get better value for money. I was originally looking at moderates first time I went until I realised I wanted to do lots of restaurants and it would be better value for money / saving to upgrade a deluxe hotel. |
