I did a an applied physics degree thirty years ago. I have worked in medical physics for 27 years. It is a interesting job with highly contested entry into the 3 year STP program which results in registration to practice as a clinical scientist.
It is part of my job role to supervise and assess STP trainees. We are still struggling to train up enough staff into this specialist role to fulfil staff leaving due to retirement etc. |

DS finished joint masters in theoretical physics and maths at St Andews uni last year. He is currently doing his PHD at Exeter uni.. He would ideally love to stay in academia/ research. Its weather he is interested in. He completed a summer internship at the met office, I would say that influenced him going to Exeter for his PHD

My DS got a first in maths from the University of Liverpool last year. He's taken a year out and is really looking forward to starting teacher training in September to work at GCSE & A Level standard. It's what he talked about doing for a few years, but it nearly didn't happen...
After finishing his degree he (somewhat unenthusiastically) applied for a few accountancy & finance roles thinking they would be better career choices but, in the end, he just didn't feel it was what he really wanted to do. He actually got offered a role as a trainee accountant, but turned it down because his heart wasn't in it. I hope he's made the right choice! |

I’m not a maths grad but I work with a lot who where data scientists, data engineers, data analysts. It’s a growth market so could be worth checking out I imagine physics would allow similar depending on the course content. I did work with a software engineer who had a physics phd so I see them as degrees the open door and not technical training for a specific career.

My DS did Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A Level. Then did an automotive engineering degree. He is now an engineer at McLaren (road cars) and loves it.
