Sounds like you had a great time! Our last trip to the US was Chicago, Wisconsin and Michigan and it was nice to somewhere a bit more off the usual tourist centres. Door county is lovely if you go back to Wisconsin

Summer & Fall in Virginia, Winter & Spring in Florida & any ‘gaps’ in New York & England.

I once met an American lady who owned 3 homes, condo in NY, cabin in the Smokies & house on Tybee Island. She alternated between the three, renting out any she wasn’t using……….

We’re big Chicago Fire fans, so was very excited to read that you can visit Station 51 😀 . Your trip sounds really interesting and varied. My DH doesn’t like driving overseas but it’s interesting that your trip only had 7 hours driving time. I’ve just briefly googled and it seems possible to do the trip by train too. Thank you for sharing, it’s always good to get new ideas for places to visit

We lived less than 100 miles away from the Dells for almost 5 years and never made it there for a visit My daughter was born in Wisconsin and we would like to take her back one day for a visit so may well plan a similar trip to yours, including Chicago and the Dells. The area is very affordable for visitors and we found the local people super friendly and welcoming.

Blue Ridge Mts, Shenandoah valley, caverns etc on the western border, Ocean, beaches, Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, on the Eastern. You’re also close enough to visit the Kitty Hawke site in NC.
Near Richmond is Kings Dominion - theme & water park.
There are loads of breweries & vineyards in Virginia. They’re all worth a visit & suitable for children.
Also lots of historical sites & if you like Basketball, the University of Virginia (Charlottesville) have a great team but it’s hard to get tickets.

You could fly in/out of Washington & spend some time there. (If you haven’t already been). The Smithsonian is fabulous & I’m guessing your son would like the Spy Museum.
Then pick up a hire car. It’s less than 2 hours to Virginia.

(If you’re desperate for a Disney fix, it’s an easy flight from Richmond).

Well your suggestion went down well, we are planning next years trip to Washington and Virginia. Hopefully we love it as much as you do!
