As already mentioned, the ESTA only needs to be valid for when he arrives in the USA. It doesn't need to be valid for the whole stay.

Just to check - he can only stay in the USA for up to 90 days with an ESTA. Hopefully, he's not thinking of staying longer than 3 months?

Yeah he will be coming back after 90 days

Erm, if he is coming back after 90 days then he can't travel there using an ESTA. He'll have to get a visa of some kind.

An ESTA can only be used if visiting for less than 90 days.

Aqualiv who did he use to book his flights as surely they should have picked this up when making the reservation.

Do you mean he's coming back on day 90 or after 91 days or more.
