OP you know your body best and if you feel that 3 days is better than 4 don't worry about what others think or can't understand.

I’m not worried what others think. I’m worried that I will struggle, end up off sick and then back to square one when all this could have been avoided by just staying as I am. They could even improve it for me but they want to make it more difficult.

It’s also mostly based on evidence. I can actually prove that the shift with three days and blocks of time off helped me as my sick record went from being off every 3 or so months to once a year, every two years.
My work just don’t care- they are one of the biggest companies in the U.K., they want to be know as a flexible company to work for yet they don’t want to stand by long term employees with health conditions.

I did get cross earlier and decided to call ohs myself to ask why it was refused to be seen. They have said that they couldn’t tell my employer what hours for me to work but they could suggest why such as working 3 and not 4 days would help etc so I’ve told them to rerefer me. I’ve just gone back onto tramadol from codeine so it’s stronger now and I’ll speak to them about that and how my shifts help me now. Hopefully they will listen.

But Im going to look for a different job- what worries me more is that a new employer might even be worse

Even with your new pattern I think you may struggle to find another job as flexible as this.

I still think they are being unreasonable

It’s hard to comment if they are being unreasonable or not as we dont if know if this is part of a bigger picture to try and align working patterns overall to meet business needs or resolve other issues. It’s a nightmare altering shift patterns so can’t imagine the company is doing it simply to annoy OP.

Reasonable adjustments are very vague, it’s difficult to say for sure what the Business ‘has’ to do.

The law is that the Business must try and apply them, but no-one clearly stipulates what they are as everyone is different.
Therefore clarity is needed when trying to state that the Business is not following them.

Some are more obvious that others, eg wheelchair users and providing access. Making a suitable shift pattern suiting a Business operations and a staff members needs is more complex I suspect.

Hope you get sorted Op

If there is a business need to change a shift pattern this would be obvious and you would have to consult with all staff.
There doesn't seem to be a reason for working 4 shifts instead of 3 slightly longer ones

I work in HR.
Do you have regular reviews regarding your health or/and is it discussed in regular 121’s.
I agree that an appeal and or Grievance will be your next move.
Things to consider did you have a new contract?
When was the last time it was reviewed?
Is it now an implied working hours?
Have you completed a flexible work.
However businesses have to consider any reasonable adjustments and if the business can sustain these and if not what are the impacts?
OH will be able to state what reasonable adjustments you may need, however as stated by others the business will need to make a decision if it is a viable option.
Not sure why your union rep isn’t assisting more.

I’ve asked to get referred back to OHS. Not heard anything yet, my team leader says it’s her manager that had to send it off. He’s always the one I have meetings with about this. Not sure if it’s even been actioned.

I also asked for a meeting since they moved me to 4 days instead of 3 which will be more difficult. I also got the union in on that meeting. That resulted in them saying they have done what they can.
I submitted a 3 day week but they rejected it as my long days which are 6 hours would be on a weekend. They want my long hours on a Monday but I have no childcare. Which wouldn’t have been so much of an issue if the kids could walk home from the new school which is two roads away but they can’t so we’ve left it at that. I came out the meeting, cried had a little panic attack and then just carried on. I don’t think there is anything to be done. I do think it will affect me. As I now have about 3 on with 1 day off then 4 on. It’s not going to give me any recovery time. Back to square one where I was with the shifts years ago.

I did check my contract and it basically says that they can change shifts and hours as they like. I would still have assumed their should have been reasonable adjustment done.

I currently have no fight left in me so I’m just going to keep plodding along as much as I can. Hopefully getting away will help too.

The business is a massive one in the U.K. and they can support it they just don’t want to. And this particular head manager is making it very hard for lots of people. He even lost one of his managers under him due to all this. Unfortunately I can’t leave to go anywhere else in the company without losing my pay grade that I have due to being there so long
