Ok, so turn off roaming, do you need to take the sim card out as well, or will it not work at all without a sim card.
Assuming you log onto their free wi-fi, does that mean I can send texts and emails without being charged for it? |

With data roaming OFF, you will still be able to use your phone and send/receive text messages (you will be charged as normal for these) but will not be able to use your email or browser.
If you are connected WiFi then you will be able to use your phones internet browser, you may or may not be able to send email, it will depend on how your email is setup. If you use webmail then you can send and receive email.

Thanks Stu - my emails download automatically to my phone, so I will see what happens over there once I have switched roaming off. Though of course we shall have wifi in the villa so it is not much of a bother to me.

I'm hoping the droid version might be out by the middle of the week after next, when I'm there (both iPhone and Droid betas were meant to be released "early August") but I'm not holding my breath...
