Just been having a look at the map

I had earlier today - based on reading that the bit between Pismo beach and LA is less exceptional - considered actually driving from Yosemite to Pismo beach ( plan leaving Yosemite via mariposa anyway so a bit on the south side ) then going north from there and ending the trip in San Fran before flying home from there rather than going Yosemite - San Fran - PCH - home from LA - that route would save almost 200 miles of driving )

And then you lot throw a spanner in the works by recommending both solvang and Santa Barbara 😂😂

😂 sorry about that! Having been to Solvang and Santa Barbara if you could only do one, SB wins hands down.
TBH until your flights are booked I would have a couple of different itineraries planned as flight prices could dictate it all

Definitely recommend visiting Santa Barbara, we have 3 nights there and would have stayed longer if we could, the whole drive from San Francisco down to LA is great, plenty of opportunities to stop off and take in the views, like lots of people have said the Seals at San Simeon are a great sight.
We stayed at Pismo Beach and I cant think of a reason to recommend anything there.
Montery was lovely and we had a nice wander round Carmel seeing how the rich lived.

Location: Newcastle
1. Monterey Whale Watching - we used sanctuary cruises
2. McWay Falls, short stop but it's absolutely beautiful
3. Elephant seal beach at San Simeon
4. 17 Mile drive, we did this in the evening and it was incredible to see the sun starting to set
5. Solvang, weird danish town
Agree with Casey12 that driving takes longer than google maps says
