Pacific Northwest Aug 2019 - Day 6 Exploring Bend and Tubing

After another great sleep, we were up early and headed to breakfast, although it wasn’t up to much - just some juice and cake. So after an unsatisfying fill up we headed to pilot Butte which is one of the many wonderful rocky hills that surround Bend. We parked at the bottom and walked the path to the top which took about 30 minutes. Once at the top there were fabulous views all around this beautiful part of Oregon with its many strange rock formations and wonderful state parks.

We walked back down and spent a bit of time in the park at the bottom - chucking a ball around and Daniel practising his bowling as he was missing his cricket. Just before 12, a van pulled up and started laying out tables, fridges and food. It was a local charity who were offering a free lunch to any children who wanted it which we thought was a lovely thing to do. However not many of the kids around chose the salad - guess this is the same the world over.

Seeing all the food and remembering our rather sad breakfast reminded us we were very hungry so headed to find a Del Taco for lunch that we had passed the day before. This is one of Daniel’s favourites for fastfood - especially as you can add your own level of hot sauce to the tacos. Full of tacos we then called into Safeway to get some supplies and ended up having a really nice chat with the cashier about how much we loved Oregon. He told us it was great but not to tell to many people about it - especially Californians!

After lunch we headed to the river for an afternoon of tubing - which involves chucking yourself into a river on an inner tube and floating along. Having done this on previous trips and thoroughly enjoyed it we were really looking forward to it. Tubing in Bend is well organised and if you have your own tubes, you can simply just get going but if not you can hire tubes in this huge car park. Along with hire, there are changing rooms, lockers, toilets etc. After sorting out tubes, you are then shuttled down to the river to begin your ride and then they collect you at the other end and bring you back to the car park.

It didn’t take long and soon we were ready to go, having applied tons of suncream as the temperature was now well into the 90s.The ride was excellent, with the river being very gentle in most places with the backdrop of the mountains making for beautiful scenery along the way. We also enjoyed checking out the riverside houses, many of which had their own boat/tube docks and dreaming of living here. After about an hour we reached a small white water section which you could get out and walk past if you wanted to. Of course we did not and it was huge fun going down the ladder of rapids - so much so that as soon as we finished we really wanted to go again.

We floated on for another 20 minutes and soon the bridge where we needed to get out by came into view. As we were drifting away from the take out point, Daniel offered to jump in and push us back on course. Up until this point the river had been very shallow and you could stand up to about your waist in it. However, the river had deepened considerably without us realising so when Daniel slid in off his Tube, he sank out of sight as we watched the top of his cap disappear under the water! Fortunately he bobbed back up again very quickly but it took us a while to help haul him back onto his tube, as we were laughing so much. Before long we were at the take out point so we dragged out tubes up to the bus, lobbed them in the trailer and headed back to the car. The tubing was such great fun and if we had longer then we definitely would have gone again.

Back at the motel, Daniel went for more swimming whilst we lazed in the hot tub. As we couldn’t be bothered to go out again, we ordered in pizza, wings and crownies (a lush combination of cookies and brownies) from Dominios and ate them around the pool.

After watching Frankie and Grace I really want to try Del Tacos, hearing that you guys like it makes me want to try it even more!

Tubing looks awesome, we were supposed to be going to Texas this week and had plans to go tubing near San Antonio, we have postponed til next year. Sounds like you had a fantastic time.

I need some crownies in my life! They look amazing

Crownies are amazing and wish Dominos over here did them. Texas sounds brilliant and that is another state we really fancy visiting - and you will love tubing I am sure.
