Mobile Medication advice for travel.

Our son (21) has autism and takes melatonin daily. Collected his meds yesterday from the hospital and they have gave him it in liquid form rather than tablet for some reason! It’s a 200 ml bottle but has his name and hospital label on. Can we take it in hand luggage with it being over 100 mls?

Essential medicines and medical equipment
You’re allowed to carry essential medicines of more than 100ml in your hand luggage, including liquid dietary foodstuffs and inhalers.

You’ll need supporting documentation from a relevant medical professional (for example a letter from your doctor or a copy of your prescription). The same applies for gel packs.

Airport staff might need to open the containers to screen the liquids at the security point.

Unfortunately we don’t have a repeat prescription as he also has narcolepsy so his meds are continually reviewed by the neurology department.

Then you will need a doctor's note. The information I posted is directly from the airport guidelines on travelling with liquids so I will imagine it will be needed and asked for.

Is your son used to taking the liquid form?

Ask the hospital to put it into 100ml bottles for the flight.

Won’t make a difference because it’s a prescription medication you need medical documentation for customs purposes especially as this is a medication with a sedative effect

Melatonin isn’t regulated as a prescription medicine in the US. You can buy it off the shelf at Walgreens/CVS etc.

I’d suggest siphoning what you need for the flight into a smaller bottle and putting the rest in hold luggage.

Would be much easier if you can just put it all in the hold. If worst came to worst and your luggage was delayed, just pop into a 24/7 pharmacy. They sell everything from 1mg up to 10mg. They even do it in chewy sweets
