It's worth the person calling the insurance company. Did they tell them about their health problem when they bought the insurance ?

I think you can also claim a refund of the taxes on the flights, although I think airlines can charge a fee for doing that.

You can definitely claim for the flight taxes. You will need to advise them before the flights I believe . I wouldn't expect them to charge an admin fee for this

We had to do similar as our DD was in hospital with a mental health issue so understand your pain. Hope everything improves for that person.
