Do they open suitcases to search ?
Ok so we fly on Tuesday to Tampa and I was talking to a frequent flyer yesterday and they suggested NOT locking our suitcases with either a padlock or luggage strap because they are physically searching suitcases now with the heightened security and either breaking padlocks or cutting straps - has anybody else heard or had experience of this because I have just bought 4 luggage straps with combination locks and not sure wether to use them or not ?

They will sometimes search your cases, get a TSA Lock and you'll be ok.

We had notes in two of our suitcases on return home to say they had been searched. We hadn't locked them though so no advice there!

I don't bother locking my cases anymore - after they broke one lock so I couldn't open it and cut another off and discarded it!
All my valuables are kept in my hand luggage. Regarding luggage straps, if they're going to open the case and they can't get the strap off because of a non-TSA combination, for example, if they REALLY want to get in, they WILL cut the strap off completely! I had a couple of nice pink straps - not necessarily as security, but more so we could see which cases were ours on the belt as OH can't tell the difference between a black case with 2 wheels and a silver grey case with 4. Both got broken by being thrown around.

We use small cable ties. Ours have been searched before and a note enclosed.

We use cable ties as i know that they'll cut off a non tsa lock if they want to search them (tsa locks can be unlocked and locked again by security). Every trip we've had one bag opened with a note inside on the way back.

We never found a 'we have searched your bag' slip until 2011+ - now we find one every single trip! The scanners apparently pick up chocolate as something suspicious, so we always find the case with our stash in it has been opened.
We also take at least one 4-way gang extension lead and I wonder whether they want to check that out, as well.
