We used exact change lanes in 4 toll areas on that day but only got billed for 2 of them so the NPR seems to be working properly in some toll areas but not others. Very curious. TBH Avis have more problems than toll violations. They don't even seem to be able to recognise that a British Airways voucher includes everything and they still add unwanted charges to the invoice. However that's another thread, in fact it's several other threads on the DIBB

Sorry, but no company has the staff to police each and every customer. They will bill by computer each charge coming in.

I gave used Avis many times without one issue. I can’t say tgat with Alamo and won’t use them again.

If people are unhappy witbavus, just don’t puck up the star and book a separate one

But they will never do that, as it is the renters responsibility to pay tolls. Would you expect Avis to sort out Moving Violation charges such as red light, non stop at Stop signs, or speeding fines?
NPR has to be active on all lanes to record non payers.
The Highways tolls people will not be interested in Avis problems, as it is a tiny amount of tolls in comparison to all the tolls taken from every driver in Florida that uses toll roads.

TBH to me it doesn’t actually appear to be the fault of Avis in much of this, more possibly corrupt or just incompetent toll booth operators who appear to be taking the money and not processing it correctly. This may not be the case in a change in the basket case, but with me I believe it could be as I used manned booths.

... just got an email reply from Avis re my asking them for the toll violation details. IMHO a 16 day wait for a bog standard reply telling me to contact the Highway Tolls admin people is hardly good customer service even taking the Christmas holiday into account.

Having read through this thread and everyone's positive/negative experiences with Avis, would any of you be able to give me a check list of things do's and don'ts for our up coming trip. We have booked a fly-drive though BA and are picking up our Avis car from MCO. Any tips, suggestions greatly received. It sounds like a nightmare sorting all this after coming back, so if there is a way to avoid it or at least be ready and armed should it happen, would greatly appreciate it!

The most effective preventative measure is to obtain a receipt at both pickup AND drop off, indicating zero amount owed.

Then, the best way to ensure there are no secret costs added afterward are entirely up to what each person feels is worthwhile.

Most obvious ones; pay upfront for full tank and return empty, plus pay for the sunpass upfront.

If you opt NOT to pay for sunpass, get a receipt every time you pay at a toll.

And make sure the Sunpass switch is set to the off position if you don’t want to use it.

You can't pay SunPass upfront with Avis sorry.

I'm with Persnickety. Ensure you see the whole contract, including the bottom line, which should show zero estimated charges (does for me but I return my two day hire with a full tank of fuel and petrol receipt to hand). I ensure the sign off sheet from garage staff shows zero to pay too. Persnickety will advise if the contract/sign off sheet will show an estimated fuel charge.

Again, and only personal to me, I don't pay for a toll pass as we're in SW Fl and no tolls here for us, but when driving from/to MCO on the 417 I always obtain toll receipts and keep them, along with petrol receipt, car hire sign off sheet for six months, just afore we return to Fl, then I distroy them after checking my credit card statement regularly. Dollar charged me for an Orlando toll a few years ago, we were 150 miles away. I insisted on photo evidence, which they couldn't provide. Took 5 weeks of them 'looking' for the photo, then refunded.

Just be 100% certain that you are not signing for extras/upgrades, you do not need anything they suggest, nothing, you are covered with necessary insurances, it's a commission gaining exercise for themselves. You have breakdown plus it's their motor, it knacks, they recover and bring you another. You can obtain excess reimbursement if you wish but do so from the UK, not at the Avis desk. I mark their card by slapping down the contract, my DL and cc and advise I want no upgrades, no additions, no fuel, no nowt, just my car and I'll be on my way. I admit I am rather harsh but I won't tolerate their slaver, esp after a nine hour flight when I tend to be about as sweet, loving and tender as Attila the hun

Sigh. I genuinely think most people would understand what I meant, Tom, but clearly I'm mistaken and I bow before your infinite wisdom.®*

So allow me to re-phrase. "Most obvious ones; pay upfront for full tank and return empty, plus decide up front to pay via sunpass".
