No it was because a kidney infection is more likely to happen again in a short space of time and can make you very ill very quickly. Insurance is a game of risk

It's all based on risk but with an annual policy if there is a change to your health and they decide to charge an extra fee to cover it you can choose to cancel and the insurance would have to cover the costr of cancellation. You can find details of this ruling on the financial ombudsmen website. If you tell them you want to cancel after the try to charge a premium for a health condition watch how quickly they we've this fee when you say you want to cancel your holiday.

Look at your documents. Pretty sure most have the FIRST rule, you must inform them if any health info changes.
Don't, please get caught short in the USA of all places. You could be in serious trouble.

Update: so I rang the insurance company, went through the medical screening again. That will be another £163 please. I don’t think so I said. I don’t believe you can charge me if it’s a new problem and the holiday was booked before. That’s right he said, you will be covered for this trip, but not for any future trips you book unless you declare the problem. Ok I said, so at this point I don’t need to pay anything and I will be covered for my June holiday. That’s right he said. So the upshot is we are covered and the medical screening is exactly as it was before I rang up. I’m just not convinced if I hadn’t asked that they wouldn’t have just taken the extra money regardless of the fact that I didn’t really need to pay it. Go the DIBB👍

As above, with an annual travel insurance policy as long as all the medical details you provided were correct at the time you took the policy out, then the insurer has to cover you for the term of the policy as agreed. You do, of course, have to disclose any changes in your medical condition(s) to them as per the policy document, but they cannot increase your premium / exclude cover already agreed. I am sure the sales agents on the phone are "encouraged" to use scary words / scenarios to try and make you pay more money though!
If the insurer wants to charge more for cover / exclude the new medical condition from cover under the existing policy term, then they are liable for any cancellation costs of the holiday you've got booked. Amazing how fast the extra charge is waived... but expect a definite marker to be on your policy for a price hike at renewal time. |
