My dad always used to go on about 'thrupenny bits' but I think it was more cockney rhyming slang

I was a Saturday girl in Marks & Spencer’s at the time and remember working late to change price tags etc.

Tom’s mention of pints, inches, poles & perches reminds me of those exercise books from Woolworths with all the measurements printed on the back cover !

My mum used thruppeny bits to hold her stockings up in her suspenders ( not the rhyming slang type!)

I remember the sixpence was used alongside the 'New Money' until 1980. It was strange that there was that crossover period.

We also used to have a half pence piece until the end of 1984. Everything in the shops was rounded up by 1/2p such as 99 1/2p to make it seem like it was better than a pound.

I was probably about 10 so mid 1960's and my Mum used to drag me shopping on a Saturday to carry the bags.

I well remember a bakery she used sold tiny bread rolls maybe 2" across so really small for a 1/4d each. Now the Farthing had long gone but they still sold 4 for a 1d. The sign on the counter advertised them as a Farthing though

There was method in her madness though. For tea she would give us about 12 of them each with a tiny bit of ham on them. Filled us up on cheap bread and save the meat.

Ah, bread rolls, I can remember going with my gran to the baker to get rolls. Always got a bakers dozen, can't see that happening today.

GG

Over 50 years a Quantity Surveyor starting in 1962. Today's quiz. Why did I learn my 27 times table and still remember it now?
