:) Homemade toffee

So am thinking of making some homemade treacle toffee for my dad for Christmas, will I need a thermometer or can it be made without?
Any recipes would be most welcome
Might try cinder toffee too.

I have a tablet recipe my Grannie then Mother used and it just says hot and very hot - works for tablet which is similar recipe. I dont think cooking thermometer were around when these recipes started so go with the old tried and tested recipes Of kook, sniff and taste (when cooled)

Used to make toffee a lot many years ago. Always used to test it by dropping drops into cold water, you could tell then whether it was hot enough to set. Never had thermometers back when I was younger and wasn't terribly difficult to make

I make tablet a lot and use the hard ball and soft ball method of dropping into cold water to tell when it's ready. You can do the same for toffee
