Paying for care
My mum may have to go in to a care home. My sister has lived in the house looking after her and working full time for well over 10 years.
The Social Services told her that my mum would have to sell the house to pay for the care. That means my sister finding somewhere to live and re homing the cat. Is this true

Probably, unfortunately. Social services will advice but decent care comes at a cost and that often means selling the home or putting a lien against it if there is insufficient ready £ funds to pay .

If the house is just in your mums name, I'm afraid she will need to sell it to fund her own care home fees (unless she has other funds to cover it).
If at all possible, could your mum continue living with your sister, with carers visiting?

I think you need proper legal advice, maybe citizens advice may help. Does you mum have other assets she could use first. Where did you sister live prior to moving in with mum? Could she move back?
I would like you hate to see your sister homeless but I do believe we should pay for our care in old age if we have assets to do so. |

Legal advice is the key but also having fluid cash . For a home in Lincolnshire we had to prove we had £100k a year in the bank. Not that we needed collateral but if not then the family house would need to have been sold . Zero council / public funding for a decent home (and like you I don’t agree it should be funded ) I have made provision for me if needs be but many don’t want to think about that (like death) |

If your sister is over 60 then your mum would not have to sell her home but possibly a charge against the house would be made when the house is eventually sold.

You need to get specialist legal advice not CAB .
Social services always say this and wait to see what you will do if your sister is over 60 everything changes. Goodluck |
