Flying to Orlando via New York from Scotland?
Appreciate any feedback or advice from anyone who has flown to Orlando via New York from Scotland - have heard that it is quicker through immigration and may also be cheaper than direct flights. Thinking about a trip Jul/Aug 16 and would consider a couple of days in NYC en route to Orlando. Thanks!

We flew with Continental from Edinburh to MCO via Newark in 2010 and it was great. Wouldn't hesitate to fly that route again.
We had 90 mind layover in Newark outbound, which was time enough to go through immigration, recheck bags, toilet stop then on the flight to Orlando. Straight off the plane in MCO and out! Indirect is generally cheaper than direct, especially from Scotland, and they fly yer round which is great, not just holiday season. I booked our flights through Expedia, but also looked on kayak and travel supermarket. Di x

We used to use this route all the time but now mainly use Virgin as it's a direct flight. However, I quite liked two short flights rather than one long one and the immigration queue was never as long as at MCO. Remember to put any duty free you buy in Glasgow in your suitcase when you get your luggage back otherwise it will be taken off you when you go through security again in NY (if flying straight on to Orlando without staying in NY).

We were considering this route and then BA put on some cheap flights from GLA and EDI via Gatwick. When we went through immigration in New York 5 years ago it was hellish and it was putting me off doing it that way although two mid length flights would be nice and break up the journey nicely.

Having gone to Orlando most of the ways you can from Scotland, I would now always choose this route by preference.
Indeed we paid about £100 each more to do so than go via Gatwick with BA. We find the 2 flights break the journey up. We usually have around 3 hours in Newark, so have dinner there at a reasonable to our body clocks time and so don't need something when we get to Orlando, when we really should be in bed! No immigration at Orlando when you are tired after all that travelling is great. Getting off the last flight back in Edinburgh rather than having to faff around in London for hours works really well for us too. United will price natch under certain circumstances too.

Flew edinburgh to fort Myers via Philadelphia last summer and it was perfectly fine, bit of a hassle having to pick up bags and drop off again after the first flight but that's probably because we weren't expecting it being the first time we've flown indirect, booked edinburgh to orlando via jfk airport for October this year with american airlines but not stopping in New York, only have a couple of hours between the flights

We also did Edinburgh - Newark -Orlando with Continental before the merger. We found the route and their service excellent. We had approx 2hrs in Newark which was enough to clear immigration. It was very busy but we found it more well managed than MCO, more staff & open desks etc. Nothing better than arriving at MCO as a domestic passenger whizzing straight through
The return flight was always incredibly short approx 6hrs once which is always a bonus. Haven't flown with them since the merger as we found the prices got a bit silly but perhaps that was as much due to the popularity of the route. |

We have flown through New York many times - both Newark and JFK.
Our experiences have generally been good. But I wouldnt say immigration is shorter or longer as it "just depends". If going indirect, we would never book a connection under three hours as this allows for a reasonable contingency for long immigration lines and short delays in the incoming flight. We generally aim for 4 hours. It is better to have toy hang around for a couple of extra hours than to risk missing a connection which can lead to a very painful start to a holiday. |
