Aww I remember doing the bombing competition on my first trip in 1998. Chip and Dale were judging and were very generous! It looks so creepy now, I'm intrigued to see it as we're staying at WL in May.

I read somewhere (perhaps on here?) that Disney had plans for a Wild West themed hotel on this site, with a boardwalk around the water and saloons and suchlike around it. Kind of like a cooler version of Cheyenne at DLP perhaps? I like the idea of that as Frontierland is one of my favourite places!

Have chuckled at this thread because my dad was injured at rc after he swam under water and when he came up he hit his head on a floating log. We also went to boardwalk and baseball, our first trip was in 1986 and am sure we went to B and B on our second trip the year after. can't remember when it closed though but I would guess at late 80's.

Edited after I re read the post and thought it sounded like I was laughing at my dads injury rather than the memory of it. Truthfully though, I think my sister and I did have a little laugh to ourselves

There is a great video I found on Youtube of RC in its current state which also overlays pictures of how it used to look!

Its called "the lonesome death of River Country".

Went in 1989, it was like a Tom Sawyer water hole, they had a wooden boom which swung over the water for you to drop in. When they opened Typhoon lagoon people migrated there.

We went on our first trip back in 1998, we called "Dettol Creek" due to the water smell! (still refer to it as Dettol Creek even now) it wasn't such a nice day when we were there & chip n dale came for a singsong until the weather cleared.

We used to visit River Country each time we went to Florida in the 90's. I thought it was good and of course we had never seen anything like it in the UK. I have video of Goofy coming down one of those drop slides. Never came down them myself although DS loved them.
Would like to think that sometime soon Disney will renovate the area.

My sister broke her toes there on our first day on our first trip and spent the rest of the 3 weeks in a wheelchair and unable to swim. Not good memories but I do remember it clearly. Does look creepy the photos of it deserted. I'm sure they will do something with the site one day.
