Glad it didn't spoil your trip despite the worry!

We travelled through MCO last Monday. All passengers were directed to the automatic machines, we went to three before finding one that worked. All was straightforward, passport scan, photo and fingerprints and obligatory questions re foodstuffs, seeds etc.
Everyone then saw an immigration officer. My wife's machine printed slip had an X, it transpired that her machine photo and passport didn't quite match , she'd had a fall 10 days before departure and had two fading black eyes. Bruised enough to fail the photo comparison.
So, everyone uses the machines and everyone sees an IO.
Oh, I also declared that I was carrying tea, coffee
and baby food, the IO didn't wave me through but escorted me, my wife and our luggage to another desk where it was x-rayed and only then were we on our way out. Minor delays but what's another 10-15 minutes...
My passport expires in February 2018 but the machine didn't 'X' me.

I'm currently debating whether to renew our passports or not. We travel in April and they expire in August, plus thy all have ESTAs on. If we were planning to travel again afterwards, we'd renew them. But we probably won't travel abroad for 18 months so it does seem a waste to renew them when there's no need.

I wouldn't renew them. They are fine the way they are now. Plus you have Estas.

Yeah it saves us passport money, eats money and 18 months on our new passports, so it does make sense to use them! It's the first time I've not had to renew my esta, too!
