I'm thrilled. This thread really brought a tear to my eye. I had a very similar life at his age. I had an ill grandparent living with us, my mother was very ill and I had two other relatives who were battling cancer and I can still remember how difficult it was to process all that. It made me grow up very quickly and you lose a bit of the innocence of childhood. I can't think of anything better than getting some respite from his environment and being free to be a carefree kid for a while. It will do him the world of good and I'm sure you'll experience the Disney magic in a whole new way through his eyes. Good on you.

As a teacher myself I feel I have to add my two pennies worth. If your nephew has good attendance currently (above 95%) and is currently on target with his progress grades then I would go ahead and take him. If year 7s are sitting exams in May for whatever reason a school has stipulated then there should be no reason why he could not sit these very exams on his return to school after the holiday. I’m not discrediting schools for how frequent they assess and track data (it’s very important in current secondary school climates) but as a year 7 pupil - I think happiness and a sense of worth should come first - if he has had an awful first year at school so far - why not give him a treat and pick his spirits up - just make sure you know he is on track and already attending school regularly.
