DH and I had this chat yesterday. We talked about whether we could be thought of as being irresponsible taking our youngest DH away during hurricane season and potentially putting him at risk. The conclusion we came to, was NO we won't be rethinking our plans. You'd never leave the house if you thought of and considered every scenario - life is to be lived!
I've followed all the Irma posts thoroughly and have felt quite moved by Dibbers comradery over the last few days - good to know everyone has pulled through safely!

Hurricane Irma has put doubts in my mind about being in orlando late August. I still want to visit orlando but I'm thinking about whether taking 2 small children during hurricane season is too much of a gamble? As the next few weeks go by my thoughts and worries might change but just wanted others thoughts on this

No. This is our 13th time at this time of year and our 1st hurricane. We'll still come September next time as planned. It had made me realise we'll only stay in hotels though and most likely only Disney.

Honestly, no. It's confirmed that I will always stay onsite though, not in a villa - which is good because we love onsite and have never considered a villa lol.
But I love September there. Yes it's hot, but we've only ever done August and September. We're going next November/December and I am worried we won't be able to swim! The only thing it's made me realise is you can get hurricane cover on your travel insurance. I need to make sure we have that. I didn't know it was available.

No. But we go every August/September and have already seen one hurricane and a tornado warning last year. We just accept it's a gamble - 50% of the time the weather is amazing, the other 50% it isn't. We had some of the nicest weather ever on our trip mid to end August to early sept this year, leaving a week before Irma hit.

I feel that as awful as it is, you can't dictate what will happen/when, you just have to plan as best you can if the worst were to happen, and in this case it seems for Orlando the plans which were put into effect have worked well.
I've avoided rainy season trips before due to the impact the rain itself could have on a tropical holiday, but never the potential for a storm whilst there. You wouldn't stop driving if someone were to have a car accident, or stop cycling if you fell off your bike etc. These things can and do happen. Although saying that, a friend of mine won't go to Florida as her parents divorced after a trip there and she didn't want the same to happen to her marriage ... |

It would never put me off going to Orlando, hurricanes happen they always have, however it would put me off going to the Keys and part of that was the reason we went at Easter this year rather than the usual August, as I was already nervous.
