I think every year since we've owned our house we have had hurricane scares and always wish the press would stop sensationalising it.
But this year I think we had a lucky escape with only some pool netting gone missing where as people not too far away still do not have electricity

They are national stations and had a few reporters in the main populated areas like Miami and Naples - they merely reported what was happening there. Their audience includes the millions who evacuated from the coast who obviously wanted to know what was happening back home, not Orlando tourists. They evacuated because of the storm surge on the low-lying coast, particularly in the south where Irma was making landfall at its strongest. It was worse there - you don't get the storm surge inland. The local stations were broadcasting all the regular press briefings from the County Emergency Management centres - rather dull. The officials lay it on strong for the benefit of those on the coast to persuade them to move out of the danger areas - there are a lot of stupid people who just don't listen and other people have to risk their own lives to rescue them - and look at the deaths because they used generators indoors despite constant warnings.
It might not have appeared much to visitors in robust buildings well away from the coast, but the reality is it was devastating e.g. to those in mobile homes further south, the destruction in the Keys, flooding in some areas, 75% of Polk County lost power and many still don't have it a week later, and the state is forecasting recovery costs at between $25bn and $41bn. What happened was massive in Florida, and much worse in the Caribbean. You can't play it down.
Well said

We are on the bottom end of Sandy Ridge top end has power bottom end none.

Thanks for the offer of help we have taken our self down to clearwater and booked into a hotel after 4 nights in the heat at night we were so so tired.

It has been any extra cost to us though maybe we can claim it back on insurance when we get home.

We have to go back to the villa tonight though as were booked to see cirque de soliel.
We would of stayed here till Monday morning other wise, hoping we get back today and find power on, more wish full thinking than anything else.
