Would this be a crazy idea?
Why have planned the first night to stay in Miami and drive to orlando the next day, I have since took a notion of seeking the keys, we have villa booked so don’t really want to break the holiday up, how viable would it be to drive from Miami to key largo? Spend a few hrs they next day a Lund it and then drive to orlando? We are landin into Miami at 4.20pm

Key Largo is an easy hour long drive from Miami airport. You could easily drive there straight after your flight and spend the night there.
It will take about 5 hours non stop to get from there to Orlando, so could be done the following day allowing you to have the morning in Key Largo. We stayed at the Key Largo bay Marriott which is a fantastic hotel but can be quite expensive.

Rush hour traffic around Miami can be brutal so time your drive to avoid it. IMO the drive to Key Largo isn't anything special until you get close to Key Largo. It's the drive from Key Largo out towards Key West that is beautiful.
I have never been to the Keys in the summer but we were there between Christmas and New Years and it was nice and warm. We had a stop in Orlando and while we had just left 80 degree sunshine the people getting on in Orlando were wearing hats, gloves and coats. |
