Is it possible to stay in San Francisco on a budget?
We are going in August as part of a bigger trip. I’m finding the accommodation much more expensive than anywhere else. I’m not tight fisted, there’s just other things I’d rather spend the money on. So I’m looking for ideas as to what others may have done. Is staying a little further out and driving in a viable option? Public transport for a family of 4 too expensive? Anything I haven’t considered?
I’m coming up with about £300 a night for good standard central San Francisco hotels in August. Is that about right? I’d be happier with half that price, but may well be living in cloud cuckoo land 😆 Edited at 11:54 PM. |

Hi
I’ve just done a check on Trip Advisor for assumed dates 7th to 11th August with 2 adults and 2 children. I then put in a filter of a maximum of £200. This gives the Coventry Motor Inn at £180 per night and the Cow Hollow Inn at £170. I think they are sister hotels. We stayed in the Cow Hollow Inn and it was great and had free parking and was situated in the Marina District which is about 30 minutes walk or a short bus ride from Fisherman’s Wharf. I think the other one may be free parking too. I think both are fairly popular on the Dibb.

I always stay outside. San Jose normally and last year Fremont. Hyatt Place in Fremont had free shuttle to the Bart. I also used a parking app so I could pre book parking in Frisco @ $11 for the day when I drove in a few times

We stayed at Travelodge by Presidio on Lombard St. It was really reasonable, free parking, free basic breakfast and really comfy bed. We walked everywhere from there and would definitely stay there again.

Expedia also gives you the choice to filter out on holiday rentals, and there are vacation rentals on Trip Advisor as well.
We visited last September, and like the OP, I nearly passed out at the cost of hotels. However, we were lucky as I had quite a number of Hilton Honors points that meant we could scrape into a room at the Hilton Union Square - the downside was that after 11 nights of condo living with separate bedroom and kitchen/living area, it felt a very tight squeeze with the three of us in the one room!

As mentioned, the Motel type places should be within your budget. Another alternative is to look in Oakland which is a short subway ride away.

We stayed at Coventry Mitor Inn as we already had the car so free parking was a bonus. It was a brilliant location would stay there again. Walking distance to Fushermans Wharf, Lombard Street and Palace of fine arts. We used Uber to get to the centre.
Best night sleep too as the beds were the best on the whole holiday.

Thanks. Found Coventry Motor Inn and Cow Hollow inn at quite good (and very similar) prices. Now I just need to decide which one to go for...
