In New York we stayed at the Renaissance Times Square, couldn’t fault the location.
Loved the view from Marriott fallsview but the cheaper Oakes hotel next door had similar views.
In Toronto we stayed at the Sheraton centre and loved the location. Situated on the path and opposite the 3D Toronto sign. The Eaton centre was just down the street and lots of restaurants around.

Embassy Suites at Niagara Falls, get a falls view room.

You can get a Funicular down to the falls area.

Excellent Buffet Breakfast overlooking the falls included in the price.

Hope the planning is going well but please don't forget to take into account the weather in January - really, really cold weather can happen and also the Niagara weather can be subject to lake effect snow. I have seen the Niagara River below the Falls freeze and it is fascinating but brass monkeys don't get a look in - in fact, at times it can be downright dangerous. Yet at other times it is absolutely fine and just on the cool side.

We went maybe 5 years ago, and Niagara Falls were frozen. I know technically they don’t freeze underneath, but it gives the appearance that they are frozen. Toronto can be very cold
Take plenty of layers, but just love Toronto.

NY - Broadway Plaza, good breakfast and easy walk to Times Square and Central Park. I think the only time we used the subway was to go to the Brooklyn Bridge. We walked miles and miles and miles but it was amazing - don't forget the Skyline!

Niagara - we stayed at Comfort Inn the Pointe on the US side literally a few minutes from the Rainbow Bridge and the fantastic sight of the falls. Be sure to do the Trolley Tour which is so cheap and an easy way to get around the falls area.

We have booked both of these for end of August this year but don't expect it will happen now
