Los Angeles area stay on / near beach

I'd also recommend Seashore motel in Santa Monica. We have stayed there twice now, the large family suite was great as we need 3 beds. It's less than 5 mins from the beach and about a 20 minute walk to the pier (or 20 mins in opposite direction to Venice Beach). Main Street has some really good bars and restaurants.

Santa Monica would also be the handiest location to get up to Beverley Hills and Hollywood areas.
