Excited about Disney

Help us plan our week in LA area...
We're in LA area for 7 nights, finishing with the last 3nights in Anaheim to do Disney.
Our kids are 5 and 8. Don't mind splitting the first 4 nights over 2 hotels, but would be glad of tips on where to stay for 4 nights that we could possibly do Universal for 1 day and see some other LA or nice beach sites from too? Legoland a possible alternative to Universal (not both), but not interested in Sea World. |

Legoland is in San Diego which is about 120 miles from LA.
I stayed at the Sheraton Universal for one night this year, cost me £179 but it was worth it for the location , we walked to City Walk at night and then the park the next day. 1 day was enough to do everything though. We loved Universal but its quite different from Orlando as its a working studio . Personally I think its better for old kids but it does depend on how much of a dare devil the younger one is and whether they reach the height requirements. California Science Centre is good, my kids were older when we went last year and we spent a couple of hours there with younger kids you could spend a lot longer. Its free bar car parking and I think $2 each to see the Space Shuttle Endeavour. I dislike all things space but that was impressive you walk right under the shuttle. Was a highlight of our time in LA last year. Hollywood etc I don't care much for its a bit tacky and grubby a few hours there was enough for us really. Long Beach is nice, there's a big Aquarium there, the beach, Queen Mary which you can tour (we didn't), we only had 1/2 day there but I would like to go back for longer we just don't have time. |

If you have a car, maybe Santa Monica may the place for the 4 nights. You have the beach, pier and fun fair there and can reach Hollywood, Universal, Space Museum etc all in about an hours drive from that base.

We really like Redondo Beach but it is quite far from most of the areas you may want to visit. Great for the airport though.
It does have a nice pier with amusements on it which the kids will like. The Crowne Plaza hotel there is right on the beach and has a swimming pool on one of the roof tops overlooking the piers. |
